The summer edit: seven must-haves to see you through the heat

From this season’s most wanted silhouettes and on-trend textures, here are the top buys for a stylish summer.

The statement hat

No summer wardrobe this season is complete without a super-size statement straw hat. So much more impactful than your classic Panama hat, we’re seeing rounder shapes, generous proportions, and more glorious embroidery detailing. The statement straw hat is no longer reserved for only the beach – wear it while picking up fruit and veges at your local grocer or on your weekend away. Team it up with a summery dress or shorts and jandals, and keep your make-up nude and all other accessories simple.

The linen dress

Every summer has its key dress silhouette, and this year it’s the vintage-inspired linen dress. The look is simple and wholesome – forget fussy dresses, this is the easiest way to update your seasonal style. Choose a linen dress in soft ice-cream shades of lemon yellow, dirty pink, duck egg blue or lilac; pair it with espadrilles and colourful cat eye sunglasses, and you’ve got your go-to holiday outfit right there. Key features on the linen dress, such as shoulder tie-straps and off-the-one-shoulder ruffles, add further interest to the trend.

Textured swimwear

Yes, one-shoulder swimwear and high-cut monokinis are in this year, but it is with unexpected textures that beachwear is making waves this summer. Ditch last season’s neon and fruit-inspired bikinis, and make a statement in swimwear featuring denim, crochet, summer velvet, gingham or neoprene instead. Details such as mesh inserts, cut-out side seams, ruffles and shoulder caps offer great variation within the texture trend. With so much choice this season, you’ll find it hard to settle for just one.

The daytime clutch

Despite circular slings and geometric bowling bags coming through strongly, it's the straw clutch that's leading the handbag search this season. Invest in this stand-out piece of arm candy to polish your summer look – it’s high-impact yet still ultra-fun, and can dress up even the most boring of shorts or dresses. Our favourite options include envelope and circular shapes, and be sure to look out for details such as embroidery, tassels, leather inserts and stripes to add a flash of personality.

OTT earrings

Just when you thought accessories could not get any more oversized, this season sees the return of bigger and more outrageously fun earrings. Think of OTT earrings as a means of bringing runway trends to your wardrobe in an affordable way. We're not just talking about the bold tassels or pom-pom earrings you already own – although those work too – this summer is all about linear drops, sculptural hoops and gem-embellished chandeliers. For a sultry summer look, opt for five-drop ombre earrings or a pair of chunky disc hoops.

Round aviator sunglasses

Aviators never go out of style – but this season we’re seeing awesome updates to the classic style. Inspired by 90s grunge, the new aviators feature a more circular shape (think classic Rayban aviators meets John Lennon) and might contain micro-trend details such as metal trim, reflective lenses, double bridges and micro-arrows. Key colours include matt gold, black, grey and muted orange. What’s great about this trend is that, while aviators are a summer must-have, they’ll see you through into winter as a key on-trend item.

Make-up setting spray

If there’s one beauty must-have for summer, it’s NYX’s Dewy Finish Setting Spray. The facial equivalent of hair spray, a make-up setting spray is a refreshing mist that hydrates your skin and sets your make-up. Forget translucent powder – setting sprays are the answer for a matte look that’s impervious to soaring temperatures and sweat. Use it at home or on holiday, it’s small enough to tuck into your handbag – and for all-round coverage, team it up with waterproof mascara.
