How to rock party season style this festive season

Forgot that trusty number in your wardrobe – this December sees smoking fashion trends to take you through the festive season and New Year’s Eve. Here are six ways to update your look.

Say hello to summer velvet

Soft, sexy and opulent, summer velvet brings newness to the season’s offering: it may seem like an unlikely fabric for high summer, but rest assured summer velvet is lightweight and adds that extra tactile element to micro-slip dresses, off-the-shoulder bandeaux and tank tops. Stay away from solid black colour options, and go for hot-right-now hues such as dirty pink and silver. For a smouldering, feminine spin on this 70s trend, opt for a tie-necked mini dress and polish off the look with silver accessories and statement fake lashes.

Shimmer and shine

A party season staple, metallics continue to add sparkle to the party season. Look for interesting textures – such as metallic chainmail and foil rib knit – and colourways – such as bronze and rose gold, to stand out this Christmas. Keep it ladylike with a one-shoulder sheath dress in matt gold, turn up the heat with a silver chainmail micro-slip dress, or try something different with wide-leg pants teamed up with a sheer metallic blouse. If you prefer a more understated look, introduce one metallic accessory to update your look by opting for a shoe with a chunky block heel or an Alex Wang-inspired party headband.

‘Tis the season of the sequin

Full-on sequin minis, gowns, wide-leg pants and blouses with bell sleeves are all key silhouettes for the party season. Thankfully, at Christmastime you don’t have to worry about the boldness of all that bling – sequins are practically a neutral up until New Year’s Day. Team your statement sequin piece with understated jewellery, a clutch and a pair of stiletto heels. Either a smoky eye or a bold colour lip will emphasise your best asset and keep the look chic, not cheap.

Return of satin

No longer considered to be OTT, the shiny fabric takes centre stage this party season, and there are so many ways to wear it. Opt for the season’s style star, the satin wrap dress, or add some shine with wide-leg pants or military belted skirt teamed up with a sheer top. For something timeless and sophisticated, you cannot go wrong with a full-length satin slip dress. Polish off your look with fine pieces of jewellery; remember to keep it small and dainty.

Colour, colour, colour

This season sees not one colourway, but four key ones, namely fiery red, khaki green, yellow and monochrome. Choose a solid pop of colour by opting for an off-the-shoulder ruffle cocktail dress or belted halter jumpsuit, or introduce a hot-right-now colour to your outfit with a pair of statement earrings (think tassled, pom-pom or ombre drops), a cute clutch or killer heels. If you’re not keen on bling or shine, this is a great way to steal the limelight.

Up your print and pattern game

Star embellishments, celestial print, micro-polka dots and oversized florals are all having their moment. Stars in velour burn-out and cut-out embellishments, and celestial print in gold or matt foil are a great nod to all things cosmic – and are a great way to inject a sense of fun and playful to your look. For those who love the vintage-inspired look, micro-polka dots and oversized florals are a perfect print to build your outfit with.

Added to this, don’t be afraid to play with fabrics – choosing a printed item in sheer or satin fabric is another way to add dimension to your outfit. For a look that’s sure to make you stand out from the crowd, mix it up by layering print on print.
