The return of stripes – update your wardrobe with this season’s hottest print
Statement stripes take centre stage this spring – but not in the way we’ve come to expect.
After dominating spring/ summer collections season after season, nautical stripes are giving way to brighter and more eye-catching stripes. Bold, graphic and textured, this spring’s stripes will add a jolt of fun in your wardrobe, playing on everything from broad bands of colour to softer, more hypnotic micro-stripes.
Inspired by Spring/Sumer 2017 collections of couture heavyweights such as Givenchy, Fendi, Ellie Saab, Mulberry and Proenza Schouler, you can expect to see stripes in technicolour brights, 70s-inspired hues and pale blues in stores. Key fabrications seen on the runway include knits, sheers (such as georgette and tulle) and satine.
Must-have items to buy
If you’re struggling to make space in your existing wardrobe for new items, invest in these two key items:
The striped knit dress
The easiest way to embrace next-generation stripes is to incorporate the stripped knit dress in your existing wardrobe. Whether you prefer a form-hugging fit or an asymmetrical cut option, the key is to wear this memorable silhouette with confidence.
The deconstructed shirt
This season sees a fresh take on the workplace shirt. Gone are the days of boring, one-dimensional shirts; and say hello to playful shirts that feature contrasting striped prints, graphic lines, oversized shapes, frills and one-shoulder splits. New features include split sleeves and extra cuffs added in place of embellishments. The new striped shirt is feminine and unapologetically sexy.
How to wear it
As one of the most wearable trends we’ll see this season, there are numerous ways to incorporate fresh stripes in your wardrobe. You can layer multiple striped items to create a visually arresting look, wear matching stripes head-to-toe, or rely on the colour blocking in your dress, top or shirt to add dimension to your look.
Style up a knitted dress with with metallic accessories and heels for a night out in the city, dress it down with a summer blazer for work, or throw distressed denim and flat mules with it for an off-duty weekend look.
For added contrast and layering, team your striped outfit with a stripey shoe or accessories. However if you prefer a more timeless look, the golden rule is to incorporate no more than two striped items in your look.
